star fruit is poisonous to dogs

Writer: Stephanie WoodStephanie Wood

When you live in the jungle of Hong Kong, you learn that star fruit is poisonous to dogs. Not that I ever fed my dog star fruit on purpose.

It was the monkeys.

Surrounding our fenced yard are trees that monkeys freely roam in. And monkeys love star fruit. In their haste to consume one of their favorite treats, they drop a lot on the ground.

Unbeknownst to us, this dropped star fruit made its way into our yard.

I wondered why suddenly my house-bound, second-shadow dog, Annie, was begging to go outside. Turns out she loves star fruit too.

I also wondered why she suddenly begin to pee all the time.

Turns out star fruit causes kidney problems in dogs.

In fact, 1/4 of a star fruit is supposed to warrant a trip to the vet. Annie had been gorging herself on them.

So, we picked up all the dropped star fruit and watched carefully.

We were really worried the monkeys had killed her.

Thankfully, her body healed quickly and she's fine.

And now, anytime we see the monkeys climbing through the trees, we go out and check for more star fruit.

Annie misses the free treats.
